Summary: Nice piece of kit
Comment: I bought this product on the strength of the previous reviews. Despite not having any previous experience, I managed to get to understand the concept and eventually managed to download or input walks from websites/manually.

Once the walks are in the internal memory or SD card, then it is a very nice peice of equipment to take with you on a walk. I am new to walking/hiking and would only have taken on a number of recommended walks with this product in my pocket. My walks last about 4/5 hours and I take the satmap with me for a long weekend and the battery is still fine after a couple of walks. Easy to recharge anyway from computer or mains lead which are common to a number of cameras etc.

When on a walk, you can tell within minutes that you have drifted off course and are able to rectify it immediately. Very hand if the directions in the walking book are not as accurate as they could be, or indeed the gates etc have been moved or taken away completely. Having inputted waypoints on for a walk recently, I followed the instructions in the book but lost my way slightly when at the top of a hill. The satmap corrected me and led me to a railway sleeper that bridged a small stream that I couldn't even see at the time. Excellent.

Furthermore, compass included in the software as is a very clear triup log which can be reset for each walk and includes time walked, distance elapsed, average speed, altitude and even the time of sunset that day.

A very sturdy product that once you have mastered, will be a really good addition to any walkers rucksack.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!
Comment: What ever you do do not buy this product!!! It is not reliable and you will spend most of the time
sending the unit back to satmap. The ariel in the units have a problem on them and the maps are
just a con too!!! What a rip of cost to get the maps. They say because of copy right!!!!

If you want a unit which is useful get a Garmin Visa with hyer ariel on it. Ok the topo maps you can get for them
is no way the same as the os maps. But they do not cost the earth and are useable.

sorry satmap but you produce a protor type product that you let your costomers pay to work out all the faults.

You will see lot of cheap ones comming on to ebay when people get them and they dont work.

Summary: As good as it looks.
Comment: Starting to get to grips with using this excellent piece of technology: it is so versatile that it can be used in a variety of ways to suit different personal preferences. Excellent service from the support/sales telephone line, eg custom maps are turned round in a day or so. The maps are expensive - I knew this when I bought it, but the National Parks ones are good value and the Satmap comes with a voucher which enables you to get £35 off a customised map centred on an area of your choice. Only con I have found so far is that the buttons are a bit stiff to operate. I bought some screen protectors as well, not realising that it already comes fitted with one...

Summary: Good device despite screen glare
Comment: I purchased this unit for walking the Coast to Coast. I purchased the UK 1:50K map and found this sufficiently detailed for most of the walk. The ability to set the map so that it orientates itself to the direction of walking is very useful. In general the compass maintained direction well while walking but I found that when stationary it tends to swing about a lot and direction is more difficult to ascertain.

The only slight bugbears I had was that the glare from the replaceable screen made it difficult to read the map especially in sunshine; a non reflective screen would be useful. Also sliding the unit in and out of its holder caused scratching of the screen. Finally I did find that sometimes it took rather a long time to lock onto the satellites.

The unit is very robust and easy to operate even with gloves on. The ability to track the route and log distance and height gained was very useful. Overall this is a brilliant unit and I would definitely recomend it to anyone walking in the UK.

Comment: Always wanted one but thought it had a "boys' toys" cachet. That was until I got lost in the middle of Thetford Forest and had to waste time retracing steps. now it always goes with me on walks in new areas.

Especially like the route tracing facility: great to know how far travelled, time taken, altitude climbed etc.
