Customer Rating: Summary: Highly functional unit Comment: Well, from a gps point of view, its accurate - seems to be able to bring me back to a waypoint to within 1 foot approx.
Its also reasonably quick picking up satellites, and the only time its failed to lock on to satellites was indoors.
The menu system on it is reasonably straightforward, I was able to work my way round it quite quickly, sort out how to create and name waypoints, etc.
Computer connectivity/mapping still seems a bit patchy, Garmin Connect seems ok, but I was really looking for a stand alone app where I can download routes and waypoints from the Garmin, show them on a high res map, make changes, print copies then upload revised routes/waypoints. Not managed the whole thing yet, but I'm getting there (slowly).
As a walker who wants the security of being able to know exactly where you are if something happens, or just to record your route for looking at later, its an excellent device, and battery life seems very very good. If you're going to be using it with thick gloves on, the buttons may prove a bit of a challenge. USB support is excellent, came up on both Debian stable and Windows XP with no issues at all. Haven't played with the memory card yet (will do so when I work out how!).
Overall, I'm very pleased with the unit, does everything I could reasonably expect of it, but before buying any GPS unit, do your research, and make sure it is suitable for your purposes.

Customer Rating: Summary: map limitations Comment: Product is basically good BUT Garmin do not advise that only Garmin maps will work.
Plus I already had the full UK map bought for an earlier Garmin - again this also will not work as Garmin will not let you carry the 'licence' forward to a newer updated product.
Garmins customer relationship is as bad as it can get.
Customer Rating: Summary: E-Trex Comment: Came quickly, was well packed. This, I think, is the best model for walkers - once you've got to grips with the technical side.
Customer Rating: Summary: Lost no more! Comment: Bought this after a bit of research so that I could start geocaching; as mentioned by other people the standard maps are rubbish but using a micro card I downloaded some OSM maps which have transformed the unit. Having now used it 4 a week I feel a lot happier, it locks to signal v quickly and the accuracy is great, the new maps show a lot more detail and the zoom function is v good. Is there a downside; well the handbook is v basic but thats my only gripe really, the more I use it the better it becomes!
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Product Comment: I just bought the eTrex Vistra HCx to replace my old eTrex Legend. The old Etrex's took ages to acquire satellites and the reception was quite poor but the new HCx devices with the improved sensitivity acquire extremely quickly and do so whilst indoors! From a cold start it took a matter of about 1 minute to acquire as soon as I got it out of the box. From a hot start it acquires almost instantly. I see from other post many people expect to use this device as a mapping GPS, if you do so you may be disappointed as the base map is very simple and more detailed maps are expensive and certainly not up to OS standard. However for a rugged GPS that is compact and has a good quick sensetive reciever this unit is excellent.
