Summary: Not Loud Enough
Comment: Have just purchased this for my girlfriend and have been playing around with it. I thoguht it didnt seem to go very loud but thought it may be the headphones, I have changed headphones with no difference. I have the volume limiter thing turned off which helps a little but not enough. I have an X series which is plenty loud enough but this one doesnt even come close.

I have an old Sony NWZ-A816 here with the exact same mp3 files as the newer one and its at least twice as loud. If you like having your music loud I would definitely consider something else, ignore all the people who leave the "if its not loud enough you must have hearing damage" comments, it really isnt as loud as other players.

If you arent concerned about volume then there is nothing wrong with it, its excellent in all other departments. Though it does feel a little cheap and plastic-y and the buttons dont seem as smooth as the old NWZ-A816 that I have here beside it.

Summary: Not perfect but a very good buy
Comment: I bought this MP3 player to replace my long-lasting Creative Zen. I've only had it a few days but already it impresses on a number of fronts.

Several other reviewers have criticised the low volume but to me it seemed fine - the default setting for the volume limiter is off, and it seemed just as loud as my old player. I would recommend playing with the Equalizer settings at first, but the sound is great.

I had a few hitches uploading my music library at first - I used the Content Transfer software to upload all my music but I had a couple of problems with music not uploading or being uploaded twice. This was easily sorted out in Windows Explorer though. I would recommend using Media Player, just because it lets you sync playlists.

I was most impressed by the screen quality - a really clear picture when watching videos. Even though the screen is small I can watch programmes comfortably. Uploading BBC iplayer programmes was so simple too.

Overall I have no major complaints about this MP3 player. I am very happy with my purchase. A few minor issues, like not being able to create playlists on the machine and the slightly cheap feel of the buttons, are all that stop me from giving it 5 stars.

Summary: a little gem
Comment: This was a good purchase. My old ipod nano had only 2GB storage so I needed to upgrade. The Sony had a massive 16GB at a very good price. The sound quality is great . Ok, so design wise the Apple products are fantastic but for a functional item this Walkman is a great buy.

Summary: It's ok but it's not enough...
Comment: As previous people have mentioned, I thought the low volume was a slight over-reaction but I have noticed it is too low. Listening to this on the bus is a waste of time. I only bought this as my previous Sony series walkman is on it's way out and the volume on that was great. Only good thing I can say about this one is that it's easy to navigate, but cannot create playlists on this as I could with my previous one. Can't believe I'm gonna say this but it looks like it's time to look for an mp3 player outside of Sony (which I NEVER thought I'd do). Also see future Sony models have this same problem so it's time to check out Cowon.

Summary: Not as good as previous model
Comment: Before purchasing this player I had the earlier NWZ-S638FB 8gb model. Although it had a range of superfluous and cluttering features, it was a perfectly decent player in terms of sound and value. I decided to 'upgrade' to the NWZE445B 16gb model when the screen broke seemingly out of warranty. As it turns out, it isn't an upgrade (and hence the three stars), for the following reasons:

-A near 10 second loading screen. The 8gb player, if left for no more than 24 hrs would play immediately following shutdown. The 16gb player only does this for a few hours after shutdown. It's not excessive to say it's a frustrating experience waiting 10 seconds, having to press play again after this opening performance, before music even starts.
-Lag. The 16gb player has a noticeable lag when scrolling and clicking through menus.
-A much quiter master volume. Go away grandma this is not about hearing protection. If you want to listen to Arvo Part next to a busy road, expect to hear only roaring traffic.
-A not so non-scratch screen. The 8gb had a fantastically scratch proof screen; the 16gb hasn't inherited this for some reason.
-Clicky buttons. The 8gb had smooth and seperated buttons. The 16gb buttons feel like lego and they have been placed close together. They are bigger than the 8gb player though, which is a definite improvement.
-Shorter battery life. The life is still good, but clearly shorter.

In short, the only beneficial features of this 16gb player is the increase in capacity, the increase in the size of the central button, and the reduction in superfluous features. Have that in mind before purchasing this particular one, although the sound quality and value are great across the board.
